"Baltimore 12th Feby 1776. Honble Sirs. I now acquaint you that agreeable to your orders directed to Major Gist and myself, I have prov'd all the guns made by the Gunsmiths in Town, as below, in Company with Mr Vanbibber, who has seen them several times try'd in England. Mr Keener after seeing the rest try'd refus'd to have his proved but upon my threatning him a good deal he comply'd. We charg'd all the guns with one ounce of powder and two Balls. I have a proof stamp with which I stamp'd all that prov'd good, which stamp I will not deliver to any without your orders. I have the Honour to be yr most Obedt Hble Servt 1776 Thos Ewing

Wednesday 31, January 1776

"The Council called on Messrs Keener, Messersmith and Reddick to know what Quantity of Musquets they had made for the use of this Province in Consequence of their Contracts with Mr Alexander. Mr Keener reported that he had made thirty. Mr Messersmith that he had made twenty seven, and repaired fifty eight for the Ship Defence.
Mr Riddick that he had made seventy.
Ordered, That Major Gist and Captain Ewing or either of them be requested to employ a skilful person to prove the said Muskets or any others that may be hereafter made by the said Keener, Messersmith and Riddick or either of them under their aforesaid Contracts; and that the said Major Gist and Captain Ewing or either of them be empowered to draw on the Committee of Observation for Baltimore County, for pow- der sufficient for that purpose."

"... That the said Treasurer pay to Samuel Messersmith seven Pounds one Shilling and nine Pence for mending Musquets."

"... That the said Treasurer pay to (Captain) George P. Keeports one hundred & fifty five Pounds eleven Shillings and eleven pence due him per Acct passed by the Com of Claims That the said Treasurer pay to Geo. P. Keeports Thirty three pounds nine Shillings and seven Pence for the use of Peter Mackenheimer, two hundred and Thirty two Pounds ten Shillings for the use of Samuel Messersmith, eleven Pounds thirteen Shillings and four Pence for the use of Joshua Dudley and the further Sum of ten Pounds ten Shillings for the use of George Lindenburger as per Accounts passed by the Committee of Claims."

"By an explosion at the powder mills near St. Clair, Pa, on the 19th, James Hise was killed and Samuel Messersmith seriously bourned."


He also produced 10 or 12 gun locks per week, at $3.00 and repaired public arms.
